Cellular Jail

Ross Island near Port Blair

The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, is a must-visit attraction in Port Blair. It is a historic prison that was used to imprison Indian freedom fighters during the colonial era. Hiring a cab from city will cost around 1800 for the roundtrip. Buses are also in good number here departing regularly to and fro Port Blair city. Tourists’ especially couples prefer to visit this beach spot in a 2 wheeler.

North Wandoor

Munda Pahad View Point

Munda Phad viewpoint is a must-visit tourist spot in the Port Blair. It has to be reached via trek from the Munda Pahad beach which is around 3-4 km of walk. But the view that it offers of the Andaman Sea with the lush greenery will make you go spellbound.

This trek to Munda Pahad view point takes you through a dense forest path, where you’ll come across a lighthouse and a few broken huts. After trekking for about 45 minutes you will reach the point some some 700 ft above sea level.

Travelers will learn a lot about the corals, fishes and marine life creating awareness about various aspects of the oceanic environment. It is also known as the Fisheries Museum

This museum is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. It also features an awe-inspiring blue whale skeleton outside. You will get to see a lot of special things about Andaman island and its nature including a Jarwa tribe hut at qhe centre. . Once you are Inside the musuems, you’ll find informative exhibits and optional audio guides for a small fee.

Chatham Saw Mill

The Chatham Saw Mill was built by the Britishers in 1883 and was then the largest sawmill of entire Asia. Also, this was made on a separate island of Chatham under which the name was given to this mill. This island was later connected by a bridge from Port Blair.

Tourists will get see a lot of woodwork and carpentry done here with various wood including the famous paddock. It’s also impressive to see the wooden structures inside, which are still standing strong and used as offices for many other govt. works inside the mill.

The environment here is also very clean and intact. The machines here are still in use showing how robust & reliable the machinery is. From towering saw machines to intricate woodwork tools, every corner of the mill exudes a sense of history and craftsmanship. Travelers can take a guided tour as well to learn in-depth about the place & various machines present here

Also during WW2, this was a very strategic point that was regularly bombed. You even see the marks of bombs till now Tourists timing here is from 9.0 am till 02.00 pm. The entry fee will be collected at the gate which is just Rs 20

Aquarium

The aquarium as the name suggests that the place is for fish! That’s right. If you want to know in depth about the Andaman’s sea colorful world then the place in Andaman Port Blair must not be missed, especially if you are about to go for underwater activities on the island. First, you can explore this museum and then plan for a diving session in Havelock or North Bay.

This is a privately operated museum in Garacharma, Port Blair. A heritage collection of long lost historical book can be found here which are not even found in library of Port Blair. Ayyanar Temple

A beautiful temple located by the seashore of Aberdeen Bazaar. This structure has been crafted like old stoned temples. Its grand entrance makes it visible from far away and makes your senses fall in the awe of devotion. The craftsmanship is very similar to many great temples of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka

Tourists visiting the temple will also get a great view of the blue ocean with Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) just in front. Prayers can be performed at any time of the day. Since it’s very close to Marina Park, you can also have a walk to reach this place

Jain Temple

Another religious spot in Port Blair for travelers to explore. This amazingly constructed Jain Temple at the top of a hill offers a great view of the ocean and greenery of Port Blair. The grey Rocks out of which this is built give an out-of-the-world look to this pristine temple. It has a small beautiful entrance. And just inside the temple at the Centre, The deity of Shree Munisuvrat has been placed. To reach this temple you need to climb the stairs uphill, so be precautious while climbing up.

But as we know good things are hard to achieve, so similarly the peacefulness that you get here is worth the climb

Mt Manipur (Mount Harriet)

Andaman island is also comprised of very few mountains and Mount Manipur is one of the places to see in Port Blair for some breathtaking views. It’s a declared National park by the govt. of India in early 60’s decade. Though the name has been officially changed 4 years back, people still use the term Mount Harriet till date for this park

 

Beautiful huts and camps are set up here by the forest department. A well-maintained park at the top is where traveler seeks to spend their picnic time here viewing the Light house of North bay(the famous backdrop of old 20 rupees note).This national park is pretty famous for its diverse wildlife which includes saltwater crocodiles, types of butterflies, worms, boars, etc. Also, more than 1000 species of plants can be found here.  

 

To have a night stay here visitors need special permission from the wildlife department. This place is easily accessible by the Chatham jetty of Port Blair on a govt. ferry. After reaching the Bamboo flat jetty it’s hardly 25 minutes upward journey on the cab. On the way you will be warmly greeted by big giant trees which I also part of the park. There is a entry fee involved at the gate for both Car and the visitors

Marina Park

Marina Park is one of the few spots for Tourists in Port Blair which can be visited post sunset. An evening Port Blair spot, people visit here to explore some tasty Andaman street foods served at food trucks and small thelas. A few famous joints here are Dugout, Happy Belly, and normal momomos and noodles shops. 

A sea shore point, tourists must have a visit here to enjoy the sea waves with evening walks and chats. Located, very close to Cellular Jail and Aberdeen bazaar, this seaside park is all lightened up at night times. 

You can sit by the shoreside on benches or have a walk. During weekends you will find live bands performing here. This nighttime point of Port Blair is a must-visit place if you are in Port Blair

Flag Point

A recently erected structure, showcasing the point where the first Indian tricolor flag was hosted in the year 1943. This place has been revamped with modern lights, green grasses and beautiful designed stoned sitting areas. This is another nighttime place in Port Blair that must not be missed by the travelers. Since it is adjacent to the marina park, they are mostly visited together. You can take some evening snacks here and enjoy a fun time beneath the high-flying big flag & the sounds of the waves crashing. Since, this is also a sea shore point and great for relaxing.

Aberdeen Bazaar (Shopping)

Aberdeen Bazaar holds a history of more than a century as the first settlement of the Indian prisoner colony was set up here. Later it turned out to be a market marketplace area of modern Port Blair City. This place also bursts with various histories of Japanese and Britishers. The famous Clock Tower at the Centre of this bustling market region was one of the few structures constructed here in the pre independence era speaking the historical marks of this place.

Aberdeen Bazaar is like the city center of Port Blair well connected to many spots of Port Blair like Marina Park, Jail, and Water Sports Complex. Many shops and markets are to be found here. 

In the past few years, many new places have emerged as shopping hubs like Junglighat, Phoenix Bay, Bathu Basti, etc. Yet Aberdeen remains the most opted shopping area of Port Blair

Planning a trip to Port Blair city of Andaman would be best at nonrainy times which are generally between September to May. Most of the crowd visit Andaman in the 4 months of the super peak period of November, December, January, and February. However, it is good to visit Andaman during this time due to the good weather temperate, March April and May are also a decent time to visit, just that it will be a little more humid during these 3 months
