About Havelock to Neil Island

Neil Island, officially Shaheed Dweep, is the quieter island in the South Andaman group, about 40 km south of Havelock. It is reached only by sea. The crossing from Havelock takes you across open inter-island channels where the water shifts from deep blue to shallow turquoise as you approach the reef-fringed coast around Bharatpur. On calm days the ride is smooth and the views of reef edges, distant islets and open ocean make it a pleasant short journey in itself.

Activities to Try Here in Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

A couple standing in front of the Natural bridge which is a must see attraction in Neil Island

🌉 1. Natural Bridge Exploration (Howrah Bridge)

Neil Island’s signature landmark, the Natural Rock Formation, is a must-see. Carved by nature and time, this iconic bridge comes alive during low tide, when you can walk across the reef bed to witness this geological marvel. Along the way, spot small marine creatures like starfishes, sea cucumbers, and colorful crabs.

🩴 Pro tip: Wear waterproof sandals and don’t forget to check tide timings before planning your visit.

🌅 2. Sunset at Laxmanpur Beach

Laxmanpur Beach is your go-to for the most stunning sunsets in Neil Island. Think wide white sands, crashing gentle waves, and a golden horizon that makes for the perfect evening. With fewer crowds and more open space, it’s ideal for couples, photographers, or anyone who wants to unplug and soak in nature’s beauty.
🧺 Pro tip: Pro tip: Carry a beach mat and your camera, and stay back until the sky turns deep orange.

🐠 3. Snorkeling & Chilling at Bharatpur Beach

Bharatpur is the most accessible beach for water activities. Its shallow, clear waters make it perfect for snorkeling, even for non-swimmers. Just a short swim off the coast reveals beautiful coral gardens and a variety of reef fish. After your snorkel, grab a coconut, sit back in a beach lounger, or stroll around the local shacks.
📍Pro tip: Book quick snorkeling trips from the beach, no need to prebook if you’re flexible on time.

Once the sun sets, Neil Island offers another natural marvel, starry night skies. If you’re staying at beachfront properties like Pearl Park, Sea Shells, or Silver Sands, walk down to the resort’s private beach area and look up. With minimal light pollution, you’ll often catch the Milky Way and countless constellations. It’s peaceful, romantic, and surreal.

Some local boatmen offer sunset + fishing combos, where you cruise past lesser-known reefs, drop a fishing line, and watch the sky turn gold from the deck. It’s an experience that combines tranquility, adventure, and discovery.

🛥️ Pro tip: You can book the tours with a reputed DIVING CENTRE OR YOU CAN ASK US TO BOOK THE ONE WITH OUR LOCAL VENDORS IN NEIL  These trips are  usually customizable and affordable if shared with 2 to 3 people.

Safety for Travelers in the Beach

Neil Island’s main beaches are largely safe for travellers. For older guests the drive from the jetty to Laxmanpur or Sitapur is a little longer but the rides are scenic. You will usually find lifeguards and forest department staff around the busier beaches like Bharatpur. We still ask travellers to take basic precautions when visiting Neil.

  1. Avoid going too deep into the water, especially at low tide near the Natural Bridge.
  2. Wear footwear on the rocky stretches near Natural Bridge and Howrah Bridge as the reef can be sharp.
  3. Check with lifeguards before swimming or snorkelling on your own at Bharatpur.
  4. Plan Natural Bridge visits around low tide. The walk across the reef bed is only possible during low tide.
  5. Most Neil beaches close by 5:30 PM. Lighting on the island is limited after sunset, so plan your return accordingly.
  6. Carry drinking water. Shops near the beaches are limited and shut early.
